- ABOUT THE ART. From careful scans an original has been created to capture this moment in time. The artist was in the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) at the time he painted the picture working as a pilot. The pilot in the picture had finished a first solo in the Hurricane and Bradshaw painted the work to present it to the pilot of the Hurricane as a memento of his accomplishment.
ABOUT THE ARTIST. Stanley Orton Bradshaw was born in 1903. His love for aviation was consistently reflected in his work and at one point in time he was rumoured to have been asked to draw storyboards and idea sketches for HG Welles futuristic and visionary work: THINGS TO COME.
His work was reflective of the sort of style prevalent in his day.
A mixture of Art Deco and brash adventure. He saw the two world wars begin and end and all the while, every aircraft he painted portrayed its dominance and strength in the air. He painted for the covers of a large number of books for W.E. John titles (famous for the Biggles Series). He died in 1950.
