- ABOUT BOAC
British Overseas Airways Corporation (B.O.A.C.) was the British state-owned airline created in 1940 by the merger of two of the largest airlines in the world: Imperial Airways and British Airways Ltd. BOAC continued operating overseas services throughout World War II but, after the passing of the Civil Aviation Act of 1946, European and South American services passed to two further state-owned airlines, British European Airways (BEA) and British South American Airways (BSAA). BOAC absorbed BSAA in 1949 but BEA continued to trade via domestic and European routes for 25 years. An Act of Parliament in 1971 then merged BOAC and BEA with effect from 31 March 1974 forming the British Airways we know today.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER. E. J. Riding spent his working life in the aviation industry. Apprenticed to A. V. Roe & Company as aircraft engineer. During the war Riding became an AID Inspector seconded to Fairey Aviation, London Aircraft Production and the de Havilland Aircraft Company; signing out Halifax bombers and Mosquitoes as airworthy. Sadly, Riding was killed in a flying accident in 1950.
